Easy ways to go green at school
1. Set up a recycling station
Label bins clearly for paper, containers, and soft plastics. Make it a class job to check and empty them regularly.
2. Start a compost collection
Use a small bin for fruit peels and lunch scraps. Partner with a local composting service or ask families if they can take turns taking it home.
3. Create a reusable supplies corner
Encourage students to donate gently used stationery, folders, and art supplies. Keep them in a shared “take what you need” box.
4. Ditch single-use plastics
Ask students to bring reusable water bottles and lunch containers. Host a “nude food” day to celebrate waste-free lunches.
5. Decorate with upcycled materials
Use old magazines, fabric scraps, and cardboard for art projects and displays. It’s creative and cuts down on waste.
6. Save energy together
Nominate a “light monitor” to switch off lights when the class leaves. Remind students to shut down laptops and devices at the end of the day.
7. Encourage sustainable travel
Promote walking, cycling, or carpooling to school. Create a class tally chart to track how students get to school each week.
8. Make it a learning opportunity
Tie sustainability into lessons – track waste reduction, calculate energy savings, or write persuasive letters about environmental issues.
