How to run an Energy-Free Day at school

Save energy at your school

An Energy-Free Day is a powerful way to raise awareness about energy consumption and inspire students and staff to rethink their daily habits. By switching off lights, devices, and other non-essential equipment for a day, schools can highlight just how much energy is used and how much can be saved with small changes.

Step 1: Plan ahead
Choose a date that works for your school calendar and give staff and students plenty of notice. Consider tying it into a broader sustainability week or national event like Earth Hour or National Recycling Week to boost engagement.

Step 2: Set clear goals
Decide what “energy-free” means for your school. Will you turn off all lights and electronics? Limit heating or cooling? Use natural light and outdoor spaces? Setting clear boundaries helps everyone prepare and participate confidently.

Step 3: Involve students in the planning
Form a student-led Energy-Free Day committee to help organise the event. They can create posters, make announcements, and help monitor participation. Giving students ownership builds enthusiasm and ensures the message resonates with their peers.

Step 4: Prepare alternatives
Encourage teachers to plan lessons that don’t rely on technology. Think outdoor learning, hands-on activities, or group discussions. Use natural light where possible and open windows for ventilation instead of using air conditioning.

Step 5: Track and celebrate impact
Measure the school’s energy use on a typical day and compare it to usage on Energy-Free Day. Share the results in assembly or the school newsletter to show the real-world impact. Even a small reduction can be a big motivator.

Step 6: Reflect and extend
After the event, hold a debrief session with students and staff. What worked? What was challenging? Use the feedback to plan future initiatives or introduce regular “low-energy” days.

An Energy-Free Day isn’t just symbolic, it’s a practical, hands-on way to build awareness and spark long-term behaviour change.
