Smart habits for hot days

Summer brings sunshine, longer days and higher water use. But with a few simple changes, schools can help students and staff stay cool while using water wisely. Here’s how to make your school more water-efficient during the warmer months.

Saving water at school during summer

Be a leak detective

Even a slow drip can waste thousands of litres a year. Encourage students to report leaking taps, toilets, or bubblers. Create a “Water Watch” team to check for leaks weekly and notify maintenance staff.

Turn off the tap

Teach students to turn off taps while soaping hands. Place reminder signs near sinks and basins to reinforce the habit.

Use buckets, not running water

Applying mulch around plants helps retain soil moisture and suppress weeds. Students can help spread mulch and learn how it supports healthy soil. Composting food scraps from the classroom or staffroom not only reduces waste but also improves soil structure and water retention.

Keep shorter showers (for schools with changing rooms)

If your school has showers for sports or swimming, encourage students to keep them short. Use timers or fun playlists to make it a challenge.

Water gardens wisely

Water early in the morning or late in the afternoon to reduce evaporation. Use mulch to keep soil moist and choose drought-tolerant plants for garden beds.

Spread the word

Have students create posters, announcements, or short videos about saving water. Share tips in the school newsletter or on social media to involve families too.
