How we’ve teamed up

The Bupa Healthy Cities, Healthy Schools pilot
BSA has teamed up with leading health insurer Bupa to deliver a pilot initiative in selected Queensland schools in 2025 – aimed at boosting biodiversity in schools and helping students understand the link between their physical and mental health, and the natural environment.
Inspired by Bupa’s Healthy Cities programme
Since 2015, Bupa has delivered the Healthy Cities programme to “encourage people to adopt sustainable and healthy lifestyles, while Bupa invests in regenerating urban environmental for people to thrive.”

Improving the mental and physical wellbeing of Queensland students
Research across many decades has proven the physical and mental benefits of time in natural outdoor spaces. For students, as little as 10-20 minutes of sitting or walking in a natural setting has considerable positive impact on health measures like stress and anxiety, self-esteem, fatigue, energy levels, and overall fitness.
The Healthy Cities, Healthy Schools pilot supports schools to increase the time their students spend in natural outdoor spaces, to help them experience the many benefits.
Boosting the biodiversity of school outdoor spaces
The pilot equips participating schools with the supplies, tools, and resources they need to improve the biodiversity of existing greenspaces or build new dedicated natural spaces for students to engage with.
